IsotretinoinRAVREDA-AMI Newsletter, No 3, AprilJune 2005 Design of the Proposal to Monitor Vector Insecticide Susceptibility and Resistance in Peru From 13 to 17 June 2005, a meeting was held in Iquitos on methodologies for monitoring vector insecticide susceptibility and resistance, with the involvement of representatives from five RAVREDA-AMI member countries Brazil, Ecuador, Suriname, Colombia, and Peru ; , PAHO and the CDC. They discussed the methodologies and procedures necessary for establishing an insecticide resistance surveillance system in the countries and worked on a general plan for its implementation. The agreements and recommendations from this meeting will serve as input for the technical proposal for this System, which is part of the surveillance system and vector control consultancy. Nevertheless, the best photon index slope is 1.69 + .40, which is harder than -.35 the average radio-quiet QSO X-ray spectrum at low redshift Yuan et al. 1998; George et al. 2000; Mineo et al. 2000; Reeves & Turner 2000 ; although part of the difference may be due to selection biases ; and similar to the value of the X-ray background spectrum, 1.4 e.g., Gendreau et al. 1995; Gilli et al. 2001 ; . We have used this value 1.69 ; to convert from observed count rate to X-ray flux. We measure an extinction corrected X-ray flux of 4.90.510-15 erg cm-2 s-1 in the observed frame [0.5-8.0] keV band. This QSO is therefore the second faintest X-ray selected quasar detected so far see Figure 4 ; and the fourth X-ray faintest high redshift quasar overall. For spectra with low number of counts it is customary to characterize the spectral shape with the hardness ratio HR H - S ; where S are the counts measured in a soft band and H are the counts in a hard band. The measured hardness ratio for CXOCY J125304.0-090737 is -0.35 + 0.28 , defining the soft and hard X-ray bands as 0.5-2.0 keV and -0.25 2.0-8.0 keV respectively. Although not many high redshift quasars have measured hardness ratios in the literature, the ones measured are typically softer than ours. That is their HR are lower and their 's are higher. Vignali et al. 2002b ; measure a typical value of 2.0 0.2 compared to our 1.7, emphasizing the relative hardness of CXOCY J125304.0-090737 compared to other optically selected high redshift QSOs. At redshifts z 4, the observed Chandra band 0.5-8.0 keV corresponds to a rest frame band of 2.5-40 keV or higher. Any process changing the observed spectral slope is thus occurring at intrinsic higher energies than observed. Strong intrinsic absorption can certainly harden an observed X-ray spectrum. At redshift z 4, Hydrogen column densities of NH 1023 are needed to produce noticeable spectral changes. In the case of CXOCY J125304.0-090737 neither the X-ray spectrum Fig 1 ; nor the optical one Fig 3 ; show any signs of such amounts of absorption. Processes, such as Compton reflection e.g., Guilbert & Rees 1988 ; which cause deviations from a power law spectrum at high energies may therefore be important for understanding the X-ray spectral properties of high redshift quasars with hard spectra. The most prominent such features are iron emission lines, typically seen at 6.4 keV from a neutral accretion disk ; or 6.7 keV from an ionized disk ; , iron absorption edges seen between 7.0 and 9.0 keV with the energy again depending on the level of ionization in the disk ; , and a broad bump typically between 30 and 50 keV due to the Compton downscattering of the hight energy photons. For typical parameters, the spectrum of a z 4.19 quasar can be hardened by 0.10-0.15 in with respect to the underlying power law by the reflection component. On the 24th, a Savi's Warbler was at the Emirates golf course and two Blyth's Pipits were at AI Habab while two Small Skylarks were found at the Fujairah National Dairy Farm on the 26th. The find of the month, by a visiting tour group, was two Pectoral Sandpipers at the last reservoir at Hatta on the 27th. This was the first record for the country and was one of less than eight records in Arabia. They were successfully 'twitched' by Abu Dhabi EBRC members a few days later. The month dramatically came to an end with a Pin-tailed Sandgrouse 2nd record, if accepted as a wild bird ; which flew into the scrubby area adjacent to Khor Dubai, early on the 30th. Ths was followed the next day by a Little Swift 16th record ; at Ramtha tip. Amongst other interesting finds for the month were a Steppe Buzzard at Umm an Nar golf course on the Ist, a Booted Warbler on the 4th and a Barred Warbler at Das lsland on the 5th, a Grasshopper Warbler and a Common Rosefinch at the Emirates golf course on the 9th, two Long-billed Pipits on the 9th and three Lesser Kestrels at Qarn Nazwa on the 16th, a Namaqua Dove at the Fujairah National Dairy Farm on the 21st and a Steppe Eagle at Khor Dubai on the 25th. Single Short-eared Owls were found at Khor Dubai on the 25th and at Das lsland on the 27th. Das lsland also produced a Hume's Yellow-browed Warbler and a male Spanish Sparrow on the 29th and a Hume's Lesser Whitethroat on the 31st. A very tired Baillon's Crake was reported from the NARC field office in Sweihan in mid October and 45 Marsh Sandpipers were counted at AI Ghar lake in the week ending the 15th.
